Crown thinning involves the removal of secondary live branches to leave a well spaced, balanced branch structure. This can be done to allow more light to pass through the canopy.

Pollarding is a method of pruning that keeps trees and shrubs smaller than they would naturally grow. It is normally started once a tree or shrub reaches a certain height, and annual pollarding will restrict the plant to that height.

Tree crown lifting is the removal of lower branches to lift the height of the crown's base. It's carried out to increase the clearance between the ground and the lower branches. It's also used to reduce weight from a tree and allow more light to pass through the branches.
